Introduction

An installation for the disinfection of water using UV consists of three main components: the reactor, the control box and the PLC Control System.

The filter may also be placed upstream of the UV installation. In this case the two systems complement each other: water filtration and disinfection using UV technology.

Thin-film series

The thin-film series is an easily expandable modular unit fitted with 200 watt low-pressure UV lamps.
A combination of serial and parallel switching provides a high flow rate with excellent turbulence. This means that the quartz tubes do not become soiled as quickly.

The thin-film concept results in homogeneous irradiation without peaks in the irradiation minima, linked to optimum water flow.

It is controlled by means of a UV monitoring system with a highly selective UVc sensor.

A thin-film series can be fitted either with a manual or an automatic cleaning mechanism.

The thin-film series is mainly suited for disinfecting water with low transmission rates.

Compact installations

Beeckman compact installations for fluids with high transmission values (> 90%).

BPP+-types
up to about 100 m³/hour

These installations are used in the pharmaceutical industry, for seawater swimming pools, etc.

BPS-types
up to about 500 m³/hour

These types are used for the production of drinking water and production water.

BPN/BPM-types
up to about 1000 m³/hour

These reactors are also mainly used for drinking water production. They can be installed ‘in line’.

Electronic Choke Apparatus

The electronic choke apparatus is the electronic component that operates and controls the lamps.

This apparatus is based on a specially developed technology, has a wear-resistant switching mechanism and consumes very little electricity. There are versions for lamps of various different wattages. Works at 50 and 60 Hz.

The impact on the low-pressure UV lamps is:

  • An increase in UVc efficiency of up to 25%
  • A l onger lifetime
  • UVc power remains the same regardless of fluctuating input voltage

PLC controller

The low-pressure UV control system is made up of the following:

  • A high-quality UVc sensor
  • Digital indicator instruments
  • Meters for the number of radiation hours and on/off switches
  • Alarms for excessively low light intensity and lamp failure

Filtration

A multiple-layer filter is a perfect preliminary filtration system for low-pressure UV disinfection.

The advantages of filtration are as follows:

  • Removes organic impurities
  • Creates a specific biology in the filter
  • Produces good water quality

But it also has disadvantages:

  • Continuing growth of nematodes (eelworms, fusarium,
    pythium, etc.)
  • Filtration does not desinfect

UV technology using low-pressure UV eliminates these disadvantages. Filtration and low-pressure UV complement each other.
